These lovely people with long necks and limbs, oddly shaped, bald heads with big ears are from a series that started with a glob of glue. I saw something hiding within the dried clear blob, so I traced it onto a tiny canvas. An odd looking woman who seemed poised and content emerged. By our standards, this woman looked weird, and that has been a lot of people’s reaction, “Why do they look like that?” I’ve taken iconic images from my childhood and created an “alternate universe” that challenge our beauty standards. Here are a few of my favorites.
Original glob of glue inspiration
“Proud Mary” can you guess who she is inspired by?
Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci
You end up with an oval canvas, so what do you paint? A cameo. I had a contest to name her. Two winners received personalized mini canvas paintings. Her name? “Nonuon”
Some of my favorite images are by John William Waterhouse. I have re-imagined a few of his paintings
“Shhhh” This is my re-imagined version of a piece I randomly came across on line. It reminded me of my husband and I
And now for something completely different. I challenged myself to do a self portrait without any pre-sketches using only a pallet knife, going straight onto the canvas. No getting stuck in the details!
This little bird was a mostly pallet knife challenge (one of three)
This was an experiment with a smooth gesso board. Not my favorite thing to paint on, so I went crazy and just did what came to mind. My oldest sister loved it and now it hers
We are so blessed to live in the Pacific Northwest. My soul is happiest around family and the outdoors. Bonus when we get to combine the two! Which we do often. The woods around me and the nearby ocean, are the inspiration for the landscapes in my stories.
Christmas tree hunting, just a quick drive from home
These four images are from one of my favorite places to go hiking. Silver Falls at Ohanapecosh
Another area I like to visit on the east side, is the bat caves!
We would spend one to two weeks every summer camping in a tiny town called Conconully when our kids were growing up. It is where my grandparents lived. The view from Peacock Mountain where they rest.
this view is from the Peacock Mountain, where my grandparents rest in peace.
I may have mentioned dragonflies in “Gift From the Sea” a couple of times… I think they might be my spirit animal…
Since we became empty nesters, my husband and I try to take a camping trip at the ocean every year, the weekend after Christmas
And this, this right here my friends, is maybe a five minute walk from my own back yard.
Yep. Pretty blessed
Girls weekend! We froze our butts off but it was gorgeous! Camping on Orcas Island with just me and our daughters.
